A hotel reward credit card works just like any other credit cards on the market in that you earn points for the money you spend. Some of them reward you with points only for the money you spend booking a room at particular hotels or chains of hotels, others reward for every dollar you spend. You need to look at the type of card issued and how often you really do use a particular hotel chain to help you decide whether it is worth having.

To get the most out of your hotel reward credit card you will have use it every time you book a hotel room. While some cards allow you to use more than one brand of hotel, especially those where there are several names tied to one main corporation, others can only be used to earn points at one branded name. If you have to travel a lot for business there may be times when you cannot find that one name so a multiple brand card would be much more useful.

By far the best hotel reward credit card is the one that allows you to build up your points for every dollar you spend no matter what you spend it on. This means that every time you use your credit card to go shopping or buy gas you are earning points towards a free night in your favorite hotel. But again if you are going to use this type of reward card make sure that you can use the points to claim a free room at the hotel you want to use rather than being stuck using only one or two different hotels.

Look carefully at the rewards programs and compare them to each other before you choose one. There are a few differences in the offers being made, but one of the biggest ones is the number of points that you need to save up to be able to get a free room. It would be much better to choose a credit card that rewards you with a free room after say 20,000 points as opposed to one that requires you to save up 40,000 points before you get your free nights stay.

Rewards are a great thing as long as they do not come at too high of a price.
